Overview & Highlights

Nestled in the heart of Kampung Wakaf Beruas, Kuala Terengganu, Kedai Kopi Buruk is not just another coffee shop—it’s a warm, nostalgic escape that artfully blends timeless charm with comforting Malaysian flavors. This cozy space is steeped in vintage allure, with antique Vespa scooters, retro signage, and wooden chairs dating back to the 70s and 80s creating an atmosphere where time seems to slow, inviting you to savor every sip and bite.

For aficionados of classic Malaysian coffee, Kedai Kopi Buruk offers a distinctive lineup. The Iced Rich and Hot Rich coffee options are creamy chocolate blends that provide an energizing yet indulgent treat—perfectly balanced and smooth on the palate. Particularly cherished is the Kopi Butter, a buttery, aromatic experience that has become a signature among regulars. While the iced versions offer refreshing sweetness, many guests have found the hot brews to unlock deeper layers of flavor, making each cup a comforting ritual.

The culinary offerings here are a delightful journey into traditional Malay fare. Start your day with Roti Bakar, a classic toasted bread with just the right crispness, or indulge in Roti Telur Goyang, a flaky flatbread topped with a luscious half-boiled egg that oozes rich creaminess. For something heartier, the Mee Kari presents yellow noodles luxuriating in a fragrant coconut curry gravy, enriched with fish balls, tender chicken, and dried tofu, creating a harmonious dance of flavors and textures in every mouthful.

Another standout dish is the Laksam, featuring delicate rice rolls bathed in a silky coconut milk sauce, served alongside refreshing lettuce, crunchy long beans, and a fiery shrimp paste sambal that awakens the senses. Light yet satisfying, the Lempeng Nyior—a subtly sweet coconut pancake—makes an ideal treat for those desiring a quick bite that carries the essence of Terengganu’s culinary heritage.

Customers repeatedly praise the ambiance, often describing it as a tender trip down memory lane. The carefully curated old-school music playing in the background, the rustic décor, and the thoughtful layout—including a dedicated photo spot outside—immerse visitors in a classic Malaysian experience that resonates beyond just coffee and food. This strong sense of nostalgia coupled with sincere hospitality makes every visit here feel intimate and special.

While the space can get warm due to its vintage open layout, it only adds to the authenticity of the setting, making it feel like a genuine roadside kopitiam from yesteryear. The friendly owner’s warm interactions, coupled with the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee and comforting local dishes, create an inviting vibe that keeps patrons coming back.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxing breakfast spot, a casual lunch, or a cozy corner to enjoy thoughtfully brewed coffee, Kedai Kopi Buruk stands out as a hidden gem in Kuala Terengganu. It’s a place where food and atmosphere beautifully intertwine, offering more than just a meal—it’s a heartfelt celebration of Terengganu’s rich culinary and cultural tapestry.

Nice experience to having coofee. Owner brings you back old day. Some more music also playing the oldies. Very nostalgic. The food also tasty. I am order Laksam and roti bakar. First. I am order Kopi Butter. Later on i will order Kopi Buruk. Owner should put notify on menu as signature meny

Stopped by to try their butter coffee. The interior is quite nice; its classic, old-school vibe is a key selling point that attracts customers. They’ve designed the space well and even provided a dedicated spot outside for tourists to take pictures. Our drinks arrived fairly quickly. However, their cold drinks were a bit underwhelming. Personally, I preferred the hot drinks, as they brought out the strong flavors better. The butter coffee was top-notch, especially when compared to the butter nisang coffee and chocolate coffee. The selection of pastries (kuih) was quite limited, and there’s room for improvement in terms of taste. However, their roti bakar telur goyang was delicious, especially when paired with hot coffee. To place an order, simply write it down on the paper provided on the table and hand it to the waiter.

Tried this place for the first time and I’m impressed! Great food and I just love the timeless, classic atmosphere

Great place to have breakfast. The food I would say is average to good quality and taste. The drinks are superb (I had Kopi Butter) ! It’s quite hot there, but understandable because of the aesthetic/layout of the place. Beautiful design and atmosphere.

KOPI BURUK BETUL Kedai Kopi Buruk in Kampung Wakaf Beruas, Kuala Terengganu, is more than just a coffee shop — it’s a love letter to the past. Set in a small roadside lot, the space feels like a living museum, where antique Vespas, old sewing machines, retro signage, and wooden chairs from the 70s and 80s surround you. The moment you step in, it’s as if time slows down. I love how this place blends vintage aesthetics with a hearty East Coast breakfast menu. It’s not just about the visuals — the food here is just as comforting as the surroundings. My personal favourites are the Nasi Lemak Ikan and Laksa Terengganu. The former is fragrant and simple, served with sambal that has just the right kick. The laksa, uniquely Terengganu in style, is light yet flavourful — perfect for mornings when you want something familiar but special. The coffee is nice — smooth, strong, and satisfying. From bold black “Kopi Buruk” to the rich and creamy Kopi Butter, it’s a treat for any coffee lover. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Kopi Nissan Butter offers a quirky twist that somehow works. The system is well-managed; you order, take your number, and wait to be served. Even when it gets busy, the process is calm and orderly — which means you don’t feel irritated if there’s a slight delay. That said, I do wish the portion sizes were a bit more generous, especially for some of the lighter dishes. Even with the growing attention on social media, the atmosphere remains laid-back and genuine. Service is warm and quick, and despite its popularity, the café hasn’t lost its kampung soul. I recommend going early in the morning when the air is still cool and the crowd is light — a quiet time to truly enjoy the food, the coffee, and the throwback vibe. Just don’t forget: they’re closed on Fridays. If you love nostalgic spaces and traditional Malaysian flavours, Kedai Kopi Buruk is well worth a visit.

Kedai Kopi Buruk is a hidden gem for anyone who loves a bit of nostalgia. The decor is charming, with old-school signage and vintage touches that bring back memories of a simpler time. It feels like a cozy trip down memory lane. And the food! The keropok lekor is absolutely superb—crispy on the outside and soft inside, bursting with flavor. Perfect for pairing with a hot cup of coffee. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!
